If you’re anything like me, the start of September is exciting… and a little daunting.
It holds the same ‘fresh start’ energy as January, making it a prime recipient for a whole bundle of your good intentions.
“Get the website done”, “create a Facebook page”, “go to more networking events”, “declutter the filing cabinet”.
It seems to be an opportunity to put new habits in place, to implement ways of working that will make your journey of self-employment more enjoyable – and allow you to be more effective.
But just as with New Year Resolutions, there’s a high chance of failing and disappointment when life’s busyness descends. All those good intentions can go out of the window as you struggle to stay on top of the day-to-day reality of running a one-person business. Ever experienced that?!
So what if this September you chose just ONE intention to implement?
The One Non-Negotiable
Earlier this year, I was asked: “What’s the one single thing you do which makes your business successful?”
I’ve recorded a super-short video to share my answer with you. (My response might sound simple and it might sound weird, but I hope it’s helpful.)
By putting this “non-negotiable” in place every day, you’re likely to experience:
- More clarity of mind
- More ideas and inspiration coming to you
- More ease with making decisions and resolving challenges
- More people saying “yes” to working with you
- Greater capacity for receiving good money for doing your good work
What’s that one thing? Find out in this 90-second video:
I invite you to put this in place this September as your one non-negotiable business practice – the solid foundation upon which all your other decisions are built. Experiment with it and notice what changes as a result.
I always love to hear what you think so do leave a comment below.

Hi Corrina,
I appreciated this little tip and it confirmed a commitment I’ve made recently to a daily practice. I’m doing a teleclass based on the book “Creating a Life Worth Living,” and a daily practice is one of the first things you must put into place as part of the class. I’ve really enjoyed having at least 15 minutes for my practice, which has become drawing a tarot card and then using a mandala to create a page that documents in pictures and words the essence of the card. It’s been a really rewarding experience. Thought I’d share! Thanks for the affirmation of having a practice.
Best,
Julie
Thank you for sharing, Julie – it’s great to hear other examples that are rewarding. This gives others a ‘buffet’ of daily practice ideas to choose from
Great video Corrina, and a lovely point. I completely agree with you, but as I was watching I found myself realising that I have so many different practices that are about connection – which makes sense because of the spiritual nature of my work as a shamanic practitioner. What your video highlighted for me is that I don’t really have one that is non negotiable, that I do just to bring about that quiet and clarity in my mind. For example, I do journalling, but not every day. I do shamanic journeying just about every day, but often it is on specific subjects or for other people, not about my connection. My meditation sitting practice has fallen by the wayside over some difficult months, and so has a regular time to sit and do self healing in a certain way. My connection through psychic or channelling work is also not done every day.
Watching this has made me think about putting more structure in my day. I don’t want to put too much pressure on myself, by choosing too many things, so I will take your advice and pick one, non negotiable thing to help me get more clarity. The only question now is – which one?
Thanks for the blog entry xx

Kay – Thank you. Would love to hear which one you choose
Hi Corrina. Well, if you thought people were going to find your advice a bit strange, you are going to laugh at the guidance I got! It sounds like it’s not really a good example but trusting weird guidance usually works out for me so I thought I’d share it with you!
I couldn’t decide on which of my many connection methods to make into a daily practice. I realised I do connect daily, just in different ways, so is the method important? I decided to do a shamanic journey last night to ask what non negotiable time I should be taking to achieve clarity for my business.
Tarot? Journeying? Sitting meditation? Chanting? Channelled writing? No.
Hair and make up. I’m not kidding! I was told to take time every day to groom myself in the way I would ‘if I had time’.
Actually this makes sense. I love to take time to style my hair (it can be a bit unruly) and I have always adored the ritual of doing my make up, selecting which outfit and crystals to wear, etc. I’m a typical leo and doing this makes me feel more like myself. This past weekend a student told me that I don’t look like my picture on the website. Actually I usually do but when I get busy or under pressure I just scrape my hair back in a bun, wear my glasses instead of contacts and don’t bother with make up. It’s the work that counts, not the packaging, right?
I am very intrigued that this came up in my journey – and from my power retrieval guide so there is obviously something about reclaiming power by doing this. In September I will take the time every day to present myself to the world on my own terms, to feel more powerful.

Kay – Loving your ‘weird guidance’
It’s interesting the ‘rules’ that sometimes get bundled up with being on a spiritual path: ‘don’t care about money’, ‘don’t care about appearance’. Reactions to a world which cares *too* much about those things, maybe, but not healthy or helpful to go too far the other direction either.

Hi Kay
I love the hair and make up thing – I know this is one of the things I really neglect – and always too much interested in what’s going on in my head – than in what it looks like. But when I take the time to take care of my physical appearance, there is a switch in me. And actually it’s not so un-spiritual. Marke Silver of Heart of Business does a powerful exercises in his sacred sales product where the seller just focuses on what is powerful about their work, and without any word being exchanged – the person playing the client feels automatically drawn to them, safer with them, and thus rather inclined to buy. Isn’t this just what you’re doing in apreciating yourself in that way. Time to take a leaf out of your book! Thank you!

Claire – Ooh sounds like an exciting stage! I’m actually working on a free guide called “Where To Start With Getting Clients” which goes more in depth on this so keep an eye out.
Hmmm – this is the second time I’ve heard this today. Methinks the Universe is trying to tell me something
Thanks Corrina for being such a great role model.

[...] love the work of life coach Corrina Gordon-Barnes. This month she has challenged us to do one practice each day in September (it’s ok, you can start [...]
I’m interested and intrigued, both by your video and by the posts which people have written. (Thank you!) I’m a typical Leo too and I wonder if I’m suffering from not always taking that grooming time? I can really relate to that.
One utter non-negotiobale for me is “tapping” every day,(EFT, Emotional Freedom Techniqes) which I do a lot of, but I do it in very many different ways and I certainly don’t focus on myself and being centred and focussed with it, for myself, every day. I can imagine that that would really make a difference becasue when I do, it is extremely powerful.
Hmm, I’m intrigued. I’m wondering which to try (and I notice I don’t want to commit…)
I think part of the confusion is that every day looks different; the timings are different, the content is varied. I don’t have a set routine. It’s so different from going to the office every day!
Thank you, I shall ponder more.
Feel free to check back with whatever comes out of your ponderings, Rosalind! It’s funny because EFT is one of those daily practices which I *know* would be so beneficial if I did it every day but the slippery bugger keeps evading me
One day it’ll just click, I guess…
[...] wonderful life coach Corrina Gordon-Barnes recently posted to inspire people to do one thing every day in September to improve your energy for your business. I have a lot of connection practices, but no one thing [...]
Hello Corrina,
I am checking back in, as you suggested.
Following Kay’s post, about being a typical Leo and taking time to do her hair and make-up, I found that this thought just wouldn’t go away!
A fortnight later I went back to the lovely people with whom I had my colours and clothing “image” done (15 years ago!) and had a “refresh your make-up” session and came away with lots of gorgeous colours and lovely easy-to-use cosmetics. It’s like painting! So much fun. I am now taking time every morning to put on make-up and do my hair. I have been astonished at how different it makes me feel! Even if all my clients that day are on the telephone, (and have no idea how I look!)I feel far more business-like, effective and peaceful. I would never have guessed it could make such a difference. Thank you very much. I feel far more professional. That’s a very good way to start a business day.
Rosalind – This is so excellent to hear. Since posting this, I – like you – had a session with a professional make-up artist (one of the women on my Turn Your Passion To Profit programme) and it’s transformed how I see myself too. Here’s to us all looking and feeling our very best.

Excellent! Maybe it wasn’t such weird guidance after all – so glad it is working for you guys. I didn’t see anyone at all yesterday until my boyfriend came home, I have moved to the country you see, and went out walking for 2 hours. I had my wellies on and my silly woolly hat etc. And full make up – including glitter. So I’m still doing it! And it still makes me feel great, whether I am working or having a day to myself.
